Geography: Located in southwest Europe,
Spain occupies 85% of the Iberian Peninsula, which it shares with
Portugal. Africa is 10 miles south at the Strait of Gibraltar, and the
Balearic Islands are off of Spain's east coast in the Mediterranean Sea.
Spain also owns the Canary Islands which are 60 miles west of Africa.

has been inhabited by the Celts, Iberians, and Basques. It was home to
Greeks, was part of the Roman Empire and was invaded by the Visigoths,
the Moors and the Franks. Spanish kings have ruled here since the 11th
century.
